Undergraduate Scholarship: 2026 Japan Government MEXT Scholarship for International Students

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international students who wish to study at Japanese national universities as Undergraduate Students.

The MEXT Scholarship 2026 for Undergraduates is a prestigious, fully funded program that allows international students from countries with diplomatic ties to Japan to pursue Bachelor’s degrees at Japanese national universities, with full support for tuition, monthly stipends, and international travel.

There are two ways to apply for a Japanese Government Scholarship:

  • by applying to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) with a recommendation from a Japanese embassy or other Japanese diplomatic mission in your country, or
  • by applying to the MEXT with a recommendation from a Japanese university.

Eligibility Criteria

candidates should meet the following criteria;

  • Be citizens of countries with diplomatic relations with Japan.
  • Be born on or after April 2, 2001.
  • Have completed or be scheduled to complete 12 years of formal education by March or August 2026.
  • Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in Japanese or English to pursue university-level education.
  • Be physically and mentally fit for study abroad.

2026 Japan Government MEXT Scholarship Perks

The Japan Government MEXT Scholarship 2026 covers;

  • Tuition:Full Tuition fees
  • Allowance: 117,000 yen per month. A supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen per month will be added to the monthly scholarship amount for the grantees studying or conducting research in specially designated regions.
  • Education Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by MEXT.
  • Traveling Expenses: MEXT will stipulate the travel schedule and route, and provide an airline ticket to grantees who will arrive in Japan and also return ticket at the end of the programme
